Recently the members of ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association have had diverging positions on CO2 limits being proposed by the European Union. While most are developing new vehicles to meet the proposed regulations, some like Porsche have gone as far as threatening to leave the European market if the new limits are made mandatory.
ACEA members got together on March 7 to try and reach a consensus on what proposals to support, and are planning to get together again before the end of the month. The French and Italian companies are satisfied with average limits that cover their entire fleets, while the German companies that offer a large number of very high powered vehicles, prefer limits that would be tied to different vehicle types. The European Commission is evaluating the impact of various proposals this year that would be in effect by 2012 and the carmakers need to get their story straight now if they want to be heard.
