We've been face to face with Ed Begley, Jr. and the Phoenix SUT/SUV at both the SEMA show and the Alt Car Expo last year. Lucky for us, we get another chance soon when the duo makes an appearance at the Alternative Fuels and Vehicles National Conference and Expo, which starts this weekend.

The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute (AFVI) show will feature over 100 exhibitors and a ride & drive in a variety of green cars. The Phoenix SUT will be open for drives on Sunday and next Tuesday. Begley and Phoenix Motorcars CEO Dan Elliott will present the talk "The Promise of Electric Transportation" during the Technology Showcase on Tuesday.

AutoblogGreen will be reporting from the show and getting in-depth updates from as many people as we can talk to during our stay. Since we're keen on keeping our readers happy, why not take a minute to check out the conference schedule and leave a note in the comments or through our contact us page about the companies and vehicles that you feel we need to cover. If you have any questions you think we need to ask of conference attendees, let us know that, too.

As part of a student competition, designers I. Kiryakov, S. Ballmeier, K. Eichelberg & M. Dressler have attached an exercise machine to a high-speed canoe hull, and called it the Tu-Fin. The vehicle transfers the movement of the stepping user to forward motion using a flipper, according to Treehugger. What benefit does this offer to the more standard rowing that would take place in a normal canoe or kayak? None really, unless you are in need of leg exercise as opposed to arm exercise. Whatever your goal, it is pretty cool and vehicles powered by human strength always get a thumbs-up from us.

The Canadian transport ministry is buying electric vehicles converted by Hybrid Technologies, Inc for testing and evaluation. Hybrid Technologies will convert a Chrysler PT Cruiser and a Smart ForTwo to be powered by electric motors and lithium batteries. The cars are part of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Program and they will be tested to evaluate efficiency, emissions and safety of the systems. By using these types of vehicles, the transport ministry is also trying to determine what the barriers are to widespread deployment and also raise awareness of their capabilities.
